United Imaging Makes History with FDA Clearance of World’s First 5T Whole-Body MRI

In a groundbreaking development for the world of diagnostic imaging, United Imaging has officially received FDA clearance for its uMR Jupiter 5T MRI system—the world’s first whole-body ultra-high-field (UHF) MRI.

This milestone marks a new era in medical imaging, enabling clinicians to see the human body in unparalleled detail and clarity. With the 5T magnet strength, the uMR Jupiter system breaks through the long-standing limitations that previously confined UHF imaging to narrow applications.

A Leap Forward in Clinical MRI
The uMR Jupiter 5T is not just another MRI upgrade—it's a technological revolution. As the first ultra-high-field system cleared for whole-body use, and the first MRI of any field strength equipped with an 8-channel whole-body multi-transmit system, it brings extraordinary imaging capabilities to areas like the heart, abdomen, and pelvis—regions previously challenging to scan at such high field strengths.

“For decades, whole body applications above 3T have been elusive,” said Dr. Al Zhang, Ph.D., Chairman & Co-CEO of United Imaging. “uMR Jupiter breaks new ground and defines a new technical category of systems.”

Sharper Imaging. Smarter Diagnosis.
The system leverages superior signal-to-noise ratio and enhanced resolution to offer a dramatic boost in diagnostic confidence. This means faster, more precise detection of diseases and abnormalities—critical in fields such as neurology, oncology, and cardiovascular imaging.

Overcoming Ultra-High Field Challenges
Historically, ultra-high-field MRI has been plagued by issues of image uniformity and radio frequency safety. United Imaging has addressed these head-on through meticulous engineering, enabling consistently high image quality and patient safety—paving the way for broader clinical adoption.

“Our mission has always been to make cutting-edge healthcare accessible,” said Jeffrey M. Bundy, Ph.D., President & Chief Commercial Officer of United Imaging North America. “This innovation will expand clinical access to ultra-high-field imaging around the world.”

A Global Vision for Equal Healthcare
Founded in 2011, United Imaging has been a pioneer in developing advanced imaging and radiotherapy equipment. With a strong presence in the U.S. and global markets, their mission of “Equal Healthcare for All™” continues to drive their innovation and investment in R&D.

As United Imaging prepares to showcase the uMR Jupiter at ISMRM 2024, the global medical imaging community is watching closely. This system is more than a technical marvel—it’s a symbol of what’s possible when technology meets a commitment to better, more equitable healthcare.
